A format prompt does not mean you should click Format right away. Preserve the card first, recover anything missing, verify the results, then erase it.
Do not format the SD card yet. Stop using it, create a byte-to-byte image with Disk Drill, recover files from that image to another drive, then inspect two separate copies before formatting.
Formatting is a write operation. Do not take new photos, run repair tools, delete folders, or save recovered files back to the SD card. If the card clicks through an adapter, disconnects repeatedly, or is not detected with the correct capacity, consider a recovery lab.

A full card image preserves the SD card's current state before formatting changes its file system. You can scan the image later, which limits extra reads from a questionable card.
If the card mounts plus its folders open, make ordinary copies before attempting repairs or formatting. Two destinations protect you from a bad transfer, a full drive, or an accidental cleanup.
When a normal copy cannot capture everything, scan the image made in method one. This keeps recovery work away from the original card while letting you preview recoverable material.
Camera video may be stored in scattered pieces, so a basic signature scan can return clips that freeze or refuse to play. Disk Drill's camera-focused recovery mode is intended to reconstruct this type of footage.
Formatting should be the last step, not the first response to an unreadable-card message. Once the data exists in two checked locations, use the device that will normally record to the card.
Skip repeated DIY scans if the card vanishes during reads, reports a wildly incorrect capacity, becomes hot, or fails across multiple trusted readers. Those signs can point to controller or memory failure rather than simple file-system damage.
For irreplaceable wedding footage, paid client work, research data, or the only copy of family photos, unplugging the card plus contacting a reputable recovery lab may be the safer choice.

Create a byte-to-byte image with Disk Drill before formatting when the card is unreadable, RAW, unstable, or missing files. If everything remains accessible, two verified copies may be enough, though retaining an image adds another layer of protection.
Use ordinary recovery for deleted files, camera-focused recovery for broken footage, then format only after the important material opens correctly from two other locations.
Keep the untouched card plus its image until you have reviewed the recovered photos at full size, played long videos through to the end, plus backed up the final folder twice.
